PRESS ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE LOCAL EXECUTIVE OF PSPV-PSOE XÀBIA.

The Executive Committee of the PSPV-PSOE of Xàbia by means of this communiqué wished to demonstrate their total support and solidarity with the Municipal Socialist Group when today they announced the unilateral rupture by the Bloc-Centristas of the pact of government between the latter and the PSOE who until today jointly governed the Town Hall of Xàbia.

We should recall that this pact signed at the beginning of the current legislature was a programmed pact of government, which had hoped for a progressive government in Xàbia, supporting Eduardo Monfort, the candidate of the Bloc-Centristas as Mayor.
This was the third time that our group gave the position of Mayor of the town of Xàbia to this perennial figure in local politics (22 years as a councillor or mayor and leader of 4 different political groups: alianza Popular, Centro Democrático y Social, Centristes de Xàbia and Bloc-Centristas) Now “to show his gratitude” to the Socialists he has broken the pact and has withdrawn the council duties from our councillors. Paradoxically the rupture of the pact has taken place after the approval on the part of the Socialist Government in Madrid of 5.3 million Euros to be spent on Public Works in Xàbia, within the context of the “Plan Zapatero” for local investment during the economic crisis. If by defending the restoration of the old style stone surface in the Plaza de de Iglesia, or opposing the reconstruction of the mock town wall in the calle Principe d’Asturias, or stopping the rise of municipal taxes for two consecutive years, despite the wishes of the Bloc-Centristas, or proposing Infant Schools for the Port and the Arenal areas, are the reasons used by our erstwhile partners in government to justify our lack of understanding and the subsequent rupture of the pact, we must clearly announce to them that we would have no hesitation in repeating this even one thousand and one times. The height of deceitfulness occurred this morning, when after waking up to read the news of the rupture of the pact in the press, our councillors were then invited by the Mayor to submit their resignations from their posts. The town councillors of the PSPV-PSOE will be working until the last moment at the head of their departments, as they have done since the start of the current legislature. Only the withdrawal of their duties by the Mayor, and not their resignations, will prevent them from fulfilling the responsibilities and firm commitments undertaken by them, following the Legislative Pact. The unique aim that has motivated us in the pact is to try to give Xàbia a stable municipal government. Particularly in these times of economic difficulties, the town council must be on the side of the citizens, avoiding tax increases and demonstrating a greater social awareness. We are, however, waiting for a new assignment of council posts, which according to the most reliable rumours, will be based on a new pact with the Partido Popular. As soon as this takes place we will be confronted with a “Groundhog Day Pact” The town will awake one morning and everything will be as it was in 1991: Once again we will have the team of Eduardo Monfort, Juan Moragues and Vicent Chorro. We believe that our councillors have done an excellent and honest job in government, and will work diligently in opposition for the rest of legislature.
